Frequently Asked Questions

Everything parents need to know about Pen.n.Paper

Absolutely. Safety is our top priority. All conversations are monitored by content filters that block inappropriate content. Our AI tutor is specifically designed for educational math content only and cannot discuss non-educational topics. We also don't collect any personal information beyond what's needed for the tutoring session, and all data is encrypted.

No. Your child only interacts with our AI tutor. There is no chat, messaging, or any form of communication with other users or real people. The AI tutor is the only entity your child will interact with during sessions.

We collect only what's necessary to provide personalized tutoring: first name (for the tutor to address them), learning progress, and session activity. We do not collect email addresses from children, location data, photos, or any sensitive personal information. Parents can request data deletion at any time.

Yes. Our entire platform is designed with children in mind. The AI tutor uses friendly, encouraging language suitable for all ages. Math problems are presented using familiar school formats, and the tutoring approach is patient and supportive, never discouraging.

Yes! Parents have full access to session transcripts, progress reports, and topics covered. You can review what your child learned in each session and track their improvement over time through the parent dashboard.

Pen.n.Paper is designed for students from ages 5 to 18, covering math from basic counting and addition all the way through calculus. The placement assessment ensures your child starts at the right level, and the AI adapts to their pace.

We cover the complete K-12 math curriculum: Arithmetic (counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages), Algebra (variables, equations, graphing, quadratics, polynomials), Geometry (shapes, angles, area, volume, trigonometry), and Calculus (limits, derivatives, integrals). The tutor adapts to match your child's grade level and abilities.

Unlike passive video watching, Pen.n.Paper is interactive. Your child can ask questions at any time, and the AI tutor checks their understanding throughout. The whiteboard lets the tutor draw diagrams in real-time while explaining, just like a real teacher. Plus, the tutor adapts to your child's pace—going slower when they're struggling and faster when they're confident.

Yes! In Photo Mode, your child can take a picture of their homework problem, and the tutor will guide them through solving it step-by-step. We emphasize teaching the method, not just giving answers, so your child actually learns and can solve similar problems on their own.

When your child starts, they'll see math problems at different difficulty levels and tap the ones they know how to solve. This quick, stress-free assessment (no wrong answers!) helps us understand where to start. The tutor then begins slightly below their level to build confidence before gradually introducing new challenges.

Yes. Our content is aligned with Common Core State Standards and covers topics taught in schools across the US and internationally. Many parents use Pen.n.Paper to reinforce what their child is learning in school or to get ahead during summer break.

Voice-only sessions are 15 minutes each, which is optimal for maintaining focus, especially for younger children. You can do multiple sessions back-to-back if your child wants to continue learning. Avatar sessions are counted differently due to higher compute requirements.

Yes! The interface is designed to be child-friendly with large buttons, clear instructions, and no typing required for younger kids. Children as young as 5 can navigate it with minimal help. However, we recommend parents sit with younger children for the first few sessions to help them get comfortable.

Pen.n.Paper works on any device with a web browser and microphone: laptops, desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones. For the best experience, we recommend a tablet or computer with a larger screen so your child can see the whiteboard clearly.

Headphones are recommended but not required. They help your child focus and hear the tutor clearly, especially in noisy environments. Any standard headphones or earbuds with a microphone will work.

In Voice mode, your child hears the tutor's voice while watching the whiteboard—like a radio lesson with visuals. In Avatar mode, a lifelike animated tutor appears on screen, making it feel more like talking to a real teacher. Avatar mode uses more computing power, so sessions cost more credits, but many kids find it more engaging.

Sessions are saved in real-time. If you get disconnected, simply rejoin and you'll continue where you left off. Your session time is also preserved—you won't lose credits due to technical issues on our end.

A standard home internet connection (5+ Mbps) is sufficient for voice mode. Avatar mode benefits from faster speeds (10+ Mbps) for smooth video. If your connection is slow, the app will automatically suggest switching to voice-only mode.

Your child speaks to the tutor using their voice—that's what makes it interactive! The microphone is only active during tutoring sessions and is used solely to hear your child's questions and responses. We don't record or store voice data beyond the session.

Currently, Pen.n.Paper is a web app that works in your browser on any device. This means no downloads or updates needed—just open the website and start learning. A dedicated mobile app may be available in the future.

Credits are used for tutoring sessions. Voice sessions use 1 credit (15 minutes each), while Avatar sessions use 5 credits due to higher computing costs. Credits don't expire, so you can use them at your own pace. You can see your remaining credits on your dashboard.

Yes! New users get 2 free credits to try the platform. That's enough for 2 voice tutoring sessions or a 5-minute avatar demo, with no credit card required. Experience the full tutoring features before deciding if it's right for your family.

Absolutely. There are no contracts or commitments. If you purchase credits, they're yours to use whenever you want. If you have a subscription, you can cancel anytime and you'll keep access until the end of your billing period.

Yes. If you're not satisfied within 7 days of purchase, contact us for a full refund. We want you to be confident that Pen.n.Paper is right for your child.

Yes! You can create multiple child profiles under one parent account. Each child gets their own placement assessment, progress tracking, and personalized learning path. Credits are shared across the family account.

Each active session uses one device and one credit stream. If you want two children to learn simultaneously, they would each need their own device and sessions would use credits separately. Many families have one child do a session while the other does homework, then switch.

Yes! We offer discounted rates for families with 3+ children and special pricing for schools and tutoring centers. Contact us at hello@pennpaper.ai for details.

Absolutely. Anyone with access to your account can help your child start a session. The parent dashboard is accessible to anyone you share the login with, so grandparents, nannies, or other caregivers can monitor progress too.
