We spent weeks testing every major AI math tool on the market, pulling real pricing data, reading thousands of user reviews, and — most importantly — checking what the academic research actually says about how students learn math with AI.

The result? Most tools marketed as "AI tutors" aren't tutors at all. They're answer engines. And research shows that distinction matters enormously for whether your child actually learns or just gets homework done faster.

The problem most parents don't realize

Here's the uncomfortable reality: 3 out of 4 American 8th graders are not proficient in math according to the 2024 NAEP assessment. Among 12th graders, it's even worse — nearly 4 out of 5 fall below proficiency. Meanwhile, over half of US teens are already using AI for schoolwork, according to a February 2026 Pew Research survey.

The question isn't whether students will use AI for math. They already are. The question is whether the tools they're using are actually helping them learn — or quietly making them worse at math by doing the thinking for them.

Solvers vs. tutors: the distinction nobody is making

Before we compare specific tools, you need to understand a framework that every other "best AI math tutor" article ignores. AI math tools fall into three categories:

Answer engines (solvers) — You input a problem, they output the answer and steps. They never ask you a question. They never check if you understood. They move on whether you learned something or not. Photomath, Mathway, Wolfram Alpha, Symbolab, and ChatGPT all fall here.

The research is clear on why this distinction matters. A 2025 study published in Societies (N = 666) found a significant negative correlation between frequent AI usage and critical thinking, driven by cognitive offloading — the tendency to let AI do the mental work. Students who use answer engines as a crutch can actually get worse at math over time. The tool does the thinking; the student copies the output.

In contrast, a landmark 2025 Harvard study published in Scientific Reports found that students using a carefully designed AI tutor — one that asked questions, provided scaffolding, and checked understanding — learned at roughly double the rate of students in traditional active-learning classrooms, with effect sizes of 0.73 to 1.3 standard deviations.

The honest limitations: Khanmigo is text-only. It can't draw diagrams, show graphs being built, or visually walk through geometric proofs. For a subject as visual as math, that's a significant gap. Multiple reviews note that the underlying LLM occasionally makes calculation errors — it "struggles with basic math" according to a Wall Street Journal test. Math education researcher Dan Meyer has criticized it for treating every student identically regardless of their specific misconceptions. And the Socratic method can frustrate students who are stuck and need a clearer explanation before they can answer guided questions.

2. Photomath (owned by Google)

The honest limitations: Photomath is the textbook example of a solver, not a tutor. It never asks a question. It never checks if you understood. It shows you the solution and moves on. The fundamental pedagogical concern is dependency — students learn to scan and copy rather than think through problems. Teachers frequently report that Photomath enables cheating more than learning. The paywall shift has generated intense user backlash — features that were once free now cost $10/month. User reviews are filled with frustration: students who relied on the free version for understanding now only get bare answers without context.

Best for: Quick homework help when you're stuck on one specific step. Not recommended as a primary learning tool.

3. Mathway (owned by Chegg)

More concerning: parent company Chegg has seen revenue decline nearly 40% year-over-year, with workforce cuts of 45%. The company's stock trades below $1. Mathway's long-term development and support is uncertain.

Best for: We'd suggest looking at alternatives. The free tier teaches nothing, and the paid tier has better options at similar or lower prices.

4. Wolfram Alpha

Price: Basic (free with sign-in). Pro: $5–$9.99/month. Pro Premium: $8.25/month annually.

5. IXL

Best for: Schools that need diagnostic data. Not recommended as a child's primary math practice tool.

6. Brilliant.org

Price: $24.99/month, or about $13.49/month billed annually. Lifetime: $749.99.

The honest limitations: It's not a tutoring tool — it's a course platform. You can't ask Brilliant to explain a specific homework problem or walk through a particular concept on demand. It requires sustained self-motivation, making it better for adults and older students than for a 10-year-old struggling with fractions. At $25/month, it's also among the more expensive options.

Best for: Self-motivated teens and adults who want to build deep mathematical thinking from the ground up.

7. Symbolab (owned by Learneo)

Price: $6.99/month or $29.99/year.

What it actually does: A step-by-step math solver with a focus on showing detailed work. Includes an AI-powered geometry solver (a rarity), graphing calculator, adaptive practice problems, and AI chat. Unlike Photomath, it has a full desktop web version.

The good: The most affordable paid solver with genuinely useful step-by-step explanations. The geometry solver handles proofs and diagrams that most competitors can't touch. Practice problems provide spaced repetition.

The honest limitations: Still fundamentally a solver — it shows steps but doesn't check understanding. The free tier is too limited to evaluate properly, and auto-renewal complaints appear frequently in reviews.

Best for: Middle school through college students who need affordable, detailed step-by-step solutions, especially for geometry.

8. Numerade

Price: Approximately $29.99/month or $95.40/year. Pricing is deliberately opaque.

What it actually does: Video-based textbook solutions from real educators, supplemented by an AI tutor called "Ace" (built on GPT-4). Covers 6,000+ STEM textbooks with over 100 million solutions.

The honest reality: The video content library is impressive, but the company's reputation is dominated by billing complaints. Trustpilot reviews average around 2.9/5, with a 1.2/5 on PissedConsumer from over 200 reviews. The most common complaint: being charged after canceling a trial. Reddit sentiment around Numerade is predominantly negative. At $30/month for what's essentially a video solution library, the value proposition is hard to justify when YouTube and Khan Academy offer similar content for free.

Best for: College STEM students who specifically need textbook-matched video solutions. Approach with caution regarding billing.

9. Cuemath

Price: $150–$256/month for 2-3 live classes per week with a human tutor.

The good: Cuemath's Trustpilot rating of 4.9/5 from over 9,000 reviews is the highest of any tool on this list by a wide margin. Parents consistently praise tutor quality, patience, and personalized attention. The "Cue" methodology — hints rather than direct answers — aligns with research on effective teaching.

The honest limitations: The price. At $150–256/month, Cuemath costs 30-60x more than AI alternatives. For families that can afford it, the results appear to justify the cost. For most families, it's simply out of reach.

Best for: Families with the budget for premium, personalized math education.

10. Socratic by Google — Discontinued

Status: No longer available as a standalone app since October 2024. Its functionality has been partially merged into Google Lens. The co-founder has left Google.

Socratic was a beloved free homework help app with a 4.9/5 rating and billions of queries processed. Its discontinuation left a real gap in the market. Google Lens offers some of the same camera-based problem recognition, but users report it's less intuitive and less reliable than the dedicated Socratic app.

11. Microsoft Math Solver — Retired

Status: Officially retired July 7, 2025.

Microsoft has directed users to Math Assistant in OneNote and Microsoft Copilot. Neither provides the same dedicated math-solving experience. Another market gap.

12. Quizlet

Price: $7.99/month or $35.99–$44.99/year.

What it actually does: Primarily a flashcard and study tool with some math features through Expert Solutions (step-by-step textbook answers) and AI-generated practice tests.

The honest reality: Quizlet is not a math tutoring tool. It's a general study platform where math is a secondary use case. The AI tutor Q-Chat was discontinued in June 2025. Current AI features focus on flashcard generation and practice tests. For math specifically, it's a supplementary tool at best.

Best for: General study and memorization across all subjects. Not recommended as a primary math learning tool.

What about ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?

This is the elephant in the room that every "best AI math tutor" listicle ignores. Millions of students already use general-purpose AI chatbots for math help. They're free (or cheap), available 24/7, and can explain concepts conversationally.

The problem: general LLMs are not designed for teaching. They give direct answers by default (enabling cognitive offloading). They hallucinate on math problems. They can't draw diagrams or show work visually. They have no memory of what a student has already learned or where their specific gaps are. And they have no pedagogical framework — they'll happily do a student's entire homework for them without a single check on understanding.

Research backs this up: an analysis of over 574,000 student conversations with one major AI model found that students asked for direct answers roughly half the time, with minimal back-and-forth — the opposite of what produces learning.

What the research says actually works

After reviewing the landscape, it's clear that most AI math tools optimize for the wrong outcome. They optimize for getting the right answer when they should optimize for building understanding.

The research consistently identifies four factors that separate effective AI tutoring from ineffective answer delivery:

1. Visual representation matters. A 2024 meta-analysis across 41 studies and over 10,500 students found visualization interventions improve math learning with a medium effect size of g = 0.504. Students who see math worked out visually — graphs being drawn, equations being manipulated, geometric shapes being constructed — develop deeper understanding than students who only read text explanations.

2. Voice narration paired with visuals outperforms text paired with visuals. This is the "modality effect" from cognitive load theory. When a student looks at a diagram while listening to an explanation, they process information through two channels simultaneously. When they read text while looking at a diagram, both compete for the same visual channel, creating overload. Meta-analyses show benefits ranging from small to large depending on material complexity.

3. Active engagement beats passive consumption. The Harvard study showing doubled learning rates used an AI that asked questions and waited for responses. The students weren't watching explanations — they were participating in a dialogue. Tools that require active participation (drawing, answering, explaining back) produce better outcomes than tools that deliver information passively.

4. Step-based interaction approaches human tutoring effectiveness. A rigorous meta-analysis found that human tutoring produces about a 0.79 standard deviation improvement, while well-designed step-based intelligent tutoring systems achieve 0.76 — nearly identical. But the key phrase is "step-based" — the AI must walk through problems one step at a time, checking understanding at each stage.

So what should you actually use?

It depends on what you need:

If you want free, self-paced learning with some AI guidance — Khan Academy with Khanmigo ($4/month). Best value in the market, but text-only and occasionally inaccurate on calculations.

If your child needs the experience of a real tutor — Cuemath ($150-256/month) for human 1:1 instruction. Expensive, but the reviews speak for themselves.

If you want to build deep mathematical thinking over time — Brilliant ($13-25/month). Not a tutor, but excellent for developing intuition through interactive problems.
